What to Bring/Clothing
The village community is rather conservative; therefore, it is important to try and blend in with the
community. This is so that the villagers accept the intern and so that she/he can relate better
with the villagers. However, this does not mean that you need to change as a person. Women
Interns & Volunteers are advised to wear Indian dresses (Salwar-Kameez or Punjabi Style Dress)
in the field. Men are advised to wear Kurtas and pants/jeans, no shorts please. Indian clothes
can be purchased at the Project at arrival this will help many of our young girls with their income
generation activity. Also, during the cold season, shawls can be purchased at Guru Dhara, the
Self Help Group store. Please bring comfortable walking shoes; any shoes may be worn here with
Indian dresses.
In the winter months of October to March, warm clothing is required. There is no central heating. Monsoon rains begin in the second half of June and continues till September. The rain is often very heavy; it is better to have your own flashlight and umbrella.
Clothes are usually washed by hand and detergent is easily available in local markets. At the
Ashram, a laundry service is available for about Rs. 10 per clothing item.
Thick clothes like Jeans may not dry fast.
